| NBP fields 47 candidates | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 10: The National Bahujan Party (NBP), headed by Dr Satpal, has cleared the names of 47 candidates who will contest the Assembly election on the NBP mandate. Dr Satpal today said "we have fielded 22 candidates from the Kashmir valley and 25 from the Jammu region." He said the NBP would be able to win a sizeable number of seats after senior political activists from the Congress, the BJP and the PDP had joined the National Bahunan Party. He said senior Panthers Party leader, Haji Abdul Khaliq, who had joined the NBP has been given the mandate for contesting from the Baramulla seat in north Kashmir. Similarly Tilak Raj who joined the NBP recently is "our party candidate from R S Pora". Satpal stated that Dr Abdul Gafoor has been given the mandate from Nagrota after he resigned from the PDP. Others fielded by the party are Ratan Lal from Hiranagar, Dr Kulbushan from Kathua, Kuldeep Singh from Gandhi Nagar, Chattar Singh from Bishna. He said "we have decided to pool our resources in seven constituencies in the Kashmir valley and 15 in the Jammu region and we hope to register our entry in the Assembly with a bang". It may be mentioned here that the BSP had become a political force till a year ago. However, after the expulsion of Dr Satpal from the organization the BSP had suffered a major split. After the poll schedule was announced the BSP had another setback when its state unit President, Yashpal Bhagat, was expelled after staging a revolt against the party's national general secretary Narender Kashyap. Bhagat has joined the National Conference and is the party's candidate from Bishna Narender Kashyap seems to be unnerved by these splits and so far he has announced the party mandate in favour of over 65 candidates. The split seems to weigh against the BSP in the ensuing Assembly election. It may not even give any added advantage to the NBP either. Indications are that the vote bank of the undivided BSP may register major split which could give electoral advantage to their rivals. |
