| Mirwaiz announces strike for every polling day | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 10: Asking unionists to clarify their stand in light of recent statement by New Delhi that election is an alternative to plebiscite, chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday elucidated already announced programme of Coordination Committee. "Pro-India parties have been luring people to vote avowing that polls have no impact on Kashmir issue and is fought only as for administrative cause. I want to ask them how they would justify their claim when New Delhi has already spelled out that people of Kashmir exercised vote as an alternative to plebiscite," Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who is also the co- chairman of Coordination Committee, told reporters at party headquarters. India's delegate Rajeev Shukla had told the UN General Assembly's Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee last Monday that the people of the state have already exercised the right by participating repeatedly in free and fair elections and there was no need for right to self-determination. "Issues of water scarcity, electricity and development exist for last several years when these leaders were in power. When these issues could not be addressed in past, what have they got today that will resolve these issues," Mirwaiz, who was flanked by senior leaders including Aga Syed Al- Hassan, Zaffar Akhbar Bhat, Ghulam Muhammad Tari, said. He claimed that elections are being held only to hoodwink international community. Mirwaiz Umar accused pro-India leadership of having made Kashmir entirely dependent on India by pulverizing Kashmir economically since 1947. "We had well established agriculture oriented and other industries before 1947 but the successive mainstream regimes have forced us to begging bowls." Mirwaiz said. Calling the mainstream parties to join election boycott, he said they should join the campaigning to prove their sincerity. "if you are sincerely concerned about the plight of people, join the anti-poll campaign" "If they (pro-Indian leadership) still choose to contest elections, the people shall start a social boycott campaign against them."he said. Elucidating the program of Coordination Committee which he said has emerged as a true representative of "wishes and aspiration of masses" he said that the CC has been chalking out the programs as per the requirement. "On every Election Day there will be a complete strike and peaceful protests in favour of election boycott will be staged every where in the valley besides a complete blackout would be observed at night during these seven days of polls" he said On Lal Chowk Challo call, falling on the last date of seven phased polls, Mirwaiz said that peaceful protests would be staged till 12 noon and people, he said, would move towards polling stations and UN observers group at Sonawar here. "The protests will be wholly peaceful with no stone pelting or any provocative measures." On the day, Mirwaiz said, transport to ferry International media, people working for impartial human rights groups would be free from strike. Mirwaiz also welcomed the statement of American president-elect Barack Obama and hoped that the issue of Kashmir would be resolved in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of people. |
