Fourth phase kicked off
14 lakh voters, 18 segments to have tryst on Dec 7

JAMMU, Nov 10: Notification has been issued for the largest electoral battles of all phases so far four districts comprising 18 assembly constituencies go to polls in fourth phase on December 7.
As many as 18 Assembly segments in four districts of Baramulla, Budgam, Reasi and Udhampur, for which Notification has been issued today, will go to polls on December 7 during the fourth phase of J&K Assembly Elections 2008. Only the seventh and final phase of polls on December 24 will have more constituencies voting when people will exercise right to choose their representatives from 21 Assembly segments spread across three districts of Jammu, Samba and Srinagar.
A total of 13,99,171 registered electorate, which includes 7,28,470 male and 6,70,701 female voters, is expected to vote across these 18 constituencies, which are Uri, Rafiabad, Sopore, Sangrama, Baramulla, Gulmarg, Pattan in Baramulla district, Chadoora, Budgam, Beerwah, Khansahib, Chrar-e-Sharief in Budgam district, Gulabgarh, Reasi, Gool Arnas in Reasi district and Udhampur, Chenani (SC), Ramnagar in Udhampur district respectively. The total electorate that votes during the fourth phase also includes 3,348 service electors.
While November 17 has been fixed as the last date for making nominations, scrutiny of nominations will be done the next day on November 18. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures will be November 20. Polling, if necessary, will take place on December 7.
A total aggregate of 1,836 polling booths are being set up in these four districts to facilitate voters on polling day.
In Baramulla district of north Kashmir, a total of 5,18,963 registered electors, which includes 2,68,981 male and 2,49,982 female voters, will vote across 7 Assembly segments. The total electorate also comprises 748 service electors. As many as 707 polling booths will be established across the district. Sopore with 89,868 leads in terms of registered electors closely followed by Gulmarg with 81,699 voters. Baramulla constituency will have 73,644 registered voters which include 38,164 male and 35,480 females. Sangrama has the lowest electorate registered in the district with 58,505 voters.
Of the 707 polling stations to be established in district Baramulla, 117 will be set up in Sopore constituency, 110 in Uri, 109 in Gulmarg, 107 in Baramulla, 91 each in Rafiabad and Pattan and 82 in Sangrama.
In Budgam, a total of 3,83,987 registered voters (which includes 73 service electors) are expected to exercise their franchise in 5 Assembly segments of Chadoora, Badgam, Beerwah, Khansahib and Chrar-e-Sharief. Of these 1,98,872 are male and 1,85,115 female voters. Badgam is the biggest constituency in terms of registered voters with 87,049 voters while as 68,095 electors reserve the right to vote in Chrar-i-Sharief Assembly segment. The registered electorate in the remaining three constituencies are 73,028 in Chadoora, 83,890 in Beerwah and 71,925 in Khansahib respectively.
Out of the 429 polling booths being set up in the district, 97 will be established in Beerwah, 93 in Budgam, 82 in Chadoora, 80 in Khansahib and 77 in Chrar-i-Sharief constituencies respectively.
In Jammu division, three Assembly segments each in Reasi and Udhampur districts will go to polls in the coming Assembly elections.
As many as 2,12,821 registered voters are expected to vote in Reasi's maiden polls as a district, which includes 1,11,092 male and 1,01,729 female voters. In the adjoining Udhampur district, a total of 2,83,400 voters are expected to vote on December 7. Of these, 1,49,525 are male while as 1,33,875 are female voters. The total electorate includes 579 service electors in Reasi and 1,948 in Udhampur district respectively. Both the districts will have 350 polling stations installed for the ensuing polls.
In the newly-created Reasi district, a total of 97,534 voters are registered in Reasi Assembly segment alone while as 59,672 registered electors will cast vote in Gulabgarh constituency. The third Assembly constituency of Gool Arnas will have 55,615 electors which includes 29,159 male and 26,456 female voters. Reasi constituency will also have the highest number of 146 polling booths while as 107 such booths will be set up in Gool Arnas. 97 polling stations are being established in Gulabgarh segment to facilitate voters.
In Udhampur district, two of the three constituencies have over one lakh registered voters. While as 1,03,714 voters will exercise franchise in Udhampur constituency, another 1,00,190 electors will cast vote in Ramnagar Assemly segment. In the reserved Chenani constituency of Udhampur district, 79,496 voters are expected to exercise their right to vote in the coming elections. Of the 350 polling booths set up in the district, Ramnagar leads with 135 while as Udhampur will have 123 booths. Chenani Assembly segment will have 92 polling stations installed to facilitate electors.
