Special treat to `history creator’ U-22 cricketers
11/11/2008 10:53:04 PM
SANJEEV SHARMA
JAMMU, Nov 11: On their return to the state, the history maker under-22 cricket team of Jammu and Kashmir was accorded a warm reception on tea by the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, here this evening.
It was second consecutive year that cricketers have brought laurels to the state by distinguishing themselves at the national level. Last year, J&K topped their group in under-19 category thereby qualifying for the knock-out round for the first time in the history of cricket in J&K.
During the North Zone league competitions, J&K defeated Haryana by an innings and 121 runs; outplayed Delhi by 87 runs and trounced Himachal Pradesh by six wickets to top in the zone. However, J&K lost to Punjab, the second qualifying team from North Zone for the knock-out round.
“We are delighted that the boys have performed beyond our expectations and have created history by beating the teams like Delhi to top in the North Zone under-22 (C K Nayudu) competitions,” chairman of JKCA, Mehboob Iqbal told SAN.
The Association is planning to give some special treat to the boys through its president, Dr Farooq Abdullah in a felicitation function to be organized in near future.
“The team deserves appreciation and it will be after consultations with the president that an appropriate date will be decided to honour the budding talent,” maintained the chairman.
Reiterating the JKCA commitment to build better playing facilities in the state, former Ranji captain said, “The Association is contemplating a comprehensive plan to create international standard infrastructure in both Jammu and Kashmir provinces. At Srinagar, work in progress to give the Sher-e-Kashmri Cricket Stadium a new look. In Jammu, a piece of land has been identified for international standard cricket facility. The government has been agreed upon the project and hopefully the land would be transferred to JKCA very soon.”
“Last year under-19 and this time under-22 triumph, the cricket is on the right track in J&K. With the grace of God, we will be doing something different in Ranji Trophy next year,” sharing his feelings the JKCA general secretary, Salim Khan said.
Now, J&K shall take on the number two team of Central Zone in the quarterfinals of knock-out stages on November 28 at Kolkotta.
Earlier, the boys who gave outstanding performance in the competition were introduced with the chairman and general secretary, Jammu wing joint secretary, Sunit Sharma.
Prominent among others present were working president JKCA, Ramesh Mahajan, vice-chairman, Sham Saroop Kalsotra, joint treasurers, Tilak Singh (Jammu) and Majid Drabu (Kashmir) and selectors, Dr Vinod Bakshi and Ankush Abrol as also senior cricketer, Shashi Sharma.
