| No big rallies, top leaders knocking doors | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 11: Peoples' enthusiasm for the current poll process continues to be absent making it difficult for the mainstream political leaders to kick start brisk campaigning. Even the charismatic political leaders, including Dr Farooq Abdullah, have not been able to draw big crowds to their rallies or road shows. However, despite odds, Dr Abdullah succeeded in organizing a road show in Srinagar. Today he visited south Kashmir where he interacted with party workers and supporters in several areas, including Kulgam. The National Conference President, Omar Abdullah, too is engaged in giving fillip to the party campaign following field reports that the National Conference had an edge over other political parties. The NC leaders are heard selling the slogan of restoration of greater autonomy, employment package for the unemployed, end to regional discrimination and corruption free Government. The PDP leadership is trying to regain the ground that had been lost during the last three months. The Party patron, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed and the PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti have donned the robe of campaigning for the party candidates in the valley from where it had won 16 seats in the previous election. As far as Jammu is concerned, the PDP leadership has decided to concentrate in Poonch, Rajouri, Doda districts and a couple of other seats, including Vijaypur. Besides, the Congress other political parties that pose a challenge to the NC and the PDP in several segments include the Democratic Party, the CPIM, Peoples' Democratic Front and a score of independent candidates, including Usman Majid. But so far the pre-poll campaign lacks luster because people demonstrate their resentment against the poll process. Hence the contesting candidates and political leaders are seen giving weightage to door to door canvassing Field reports have indicated that though the National Conference has an edge over others in the Kashmir valley it may not be able to win an absolute majority from the valley which has 46 seats. It is in this context that the NC leaders have decided to pool all its resources for winning majority of seats from Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts. In addition to this it has the potential of winning a few seats from Udhampur, Samba, Kathua and Jammu districts. |
