| On ET report, Govt says we are working at it | | Cross-LoC Trade | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 11: Responding to a story appearing in EARLY TIMES on failing cross-Line of Control trade and rather much failing enthusiasm among the traders, the state government has sought to assure that the points raised therein are under active consideration and are being worked out at different levels. In its Monday issue, the Early Times had reported that due to complete lack of required logistics, communication facilities and banking options, the cross-LoC trade is coming close to a cropper as traders have declared to stop sending consignments across Line of Control till facilities were put in place. Choosing to ignore the fact that traders have refused to send consignments, an official spokesman on behalf of Industries and Commerce department claimed that trade is picking up even as he admitted and bottlenecks and assured that efforts are on to remove obstacles. The spokesman said that the points highlighted in the EARLY TIMES news story have already been discussed in a meeting chaired by the Advisor to the Governor Mr. H. H. Tyabji, on October 15, 2008. He said that the issues regarding telecommunication facility between Salamabad and Muzaffarabad, Poonch and Rawalakote, smooth transportation of goods across LOC, up- gradation and strengthening of road connectivity, multiple entry permits for bonafide traders, banking and expansion of the list of agreed items of trade are being attended to on top priority. The spokesman further said that the issues regarding use of currency in the cross LOC trade, setting up of the mechanism to conduct financial transaction across the LOC and setting up of branches of J&K Bank in POK and that of Bank of POK on this side of LOC, being essentially bilateral issue between the two countries are also being attended to through Government of India. The spokesman said that Industries and Commerce Department has processed and sent the list of the traders intending to travel to POK for trade activities for verification by the concerned departments by the end of October 2008 whileas some other trade organizations have also been asked to submit the list of the traders for the purpose. He said that Jammu and Kashmir government was very keen that the initiated cross LOC trade picks up and flourishes, for which, he said, all possible steps are being taken. He said that efforts are on to remove all hurdles and bottlenecks affecting the cross LOC trade in the initial stage. |
