| Need to rejuvenate theatre movement in Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 12: Budding theatre artists in Kashmir can rise to the pinnacle of glory provided there is proper ambience for them to exhibit their talent. This underlines the need of professional institutions like School of drama which can imbibe fresh lease of life in theatre. One such School, EKTA (Ensemble Kashmir theatre academy) which was started way back in 2006, works under the guiding principles of National School of Drama. Given the political upheavals in Kashmir the institution has to confront several challenges. A noted theatre activist and the director EKTA, Bhawani Bashir Yasir said, "I think theatre can bridge the gap between the people and the society and work for rebuilding socio-cultural ethos,'' He further emphasized that it has become inevitable to establish institution of professional significance which could impart professional training in dramatic arts, besides encouraging young talented theatre activists and accentuating the aesthetic standards of theatre. Against this backdrop, there is need to explore, innovate and regenerate a new theatre movement in Kashmir. The theater of Kashmir has suffered the greatest debacle during the last two decades of turmoil. There has been no serious effort from the state government to provide patronage to this art form. "I believe nation without theatre is a dead nation,'' maintains Bhawani. Adding further, "Being a torch bearer of theatre movement in Kashmir I felt it was my national and moral obligation to take all possible measures to rejuvenate theater movement in Kashmir,''. He aptly remarked that in the present political crisis keeping this institution functional is an uphill task. "I am ready to face all challenges and surpass hurdles. My artistic passion, cultural commitment and the professional zeal are the only assets and instruments to fulfill this obligation, 'he adds Yasir does not envision theatre as a medium of entertainment only, but firmly assets that it must teach us lessons to face every challenge be it social, political or cultural. He has been actively involved in the theatre movement of Kashmir since 1977.EKTA offers training to students in the field of modern dramatic literature, stage production and acting. The repertory has organized several stage plays and operas. |
