| Army major shot dead by jawan | | Infiltration bid foiled | | Jammu, Sep 14 An Army major has been shot dead by a jawan at a forward post in Rajouri sector, a Defence Spokesman said here today.
Major Harsh Kumar was shot dead by Naik Ravi Kumar at an isolated company post in Manjakote area of Rajouri district last night, he said adding that the accused has been taken into custody by the authorities.
An inquiry has been ordered into the incident and a detailed investigation is in progress, the spokesman said. Army troops foiled an infiltration bid by a group of ultras following a gunbattle stretching for over two hours in Tarkundi sector of the border district of Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir.
Alert army troops noticed a group of six to ten militants sneaking into Indian side via Tarkundi sector last night, defence sources said here, adding that the troops challenged them resulting in a gunfight.
The exchange of fire continued for about two-and-a-half hours forcing militants to retreat towards Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), they said.
There was no casualty or damage on Indian side during the exchange of fire, the sources added.
