| BJP to emerge number one: Gupta | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 12: The BJP has the potential to emerge as the number one party in Jammu and Kashmir as was proved in 1998 and 1999 Lok Sabha elections. To achieve this goal, we should take the lesson from the mistakes of 2002 Assembly elections and it should be ensured that there is minimum division of the nationalist votes now. This was stated by the former Union Minister and senior BJP leader, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, while addressing a large meeting of the party activists held at the party headquarters here. Prof. Gupta recalled that in the Lok Sabha elections of 1999 the BJP had not only bagged both the Lok Sabha seats of Jammu with big margins but also secured good number of votes in the troubled valley of Kashmir. In Jammu region the BJP had secured majority votes in as many as 31 Assembly segments out of the total of 37 seats and got significance support from valley and Ladakh also, he added and said that the Congress was relegated to third position while BJP had emerged the party No. 1, by securing 31 per cent of the polled votes whereas the National Conference got 29 per cent and the Congress could manage only 8 per cent with the result the Congress had drawn blank in these elections. The BJP leader observed that because of their failure in the coalition of Ghulam Nabi Azad Government had proved the worst ever dispensation this state had in Jammu and Kashmir. This government was most incompetent and irresponsive to the problems of the people. There was record number of agitations, dharnas and strikes during the period of past three years. |
