| PDP fields 10 for token contest | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 12: Peoples Democratic Party today released a list for token contest in 10 assembly constituencies of Jammu region where its participation is expected to be mere ceremonial. Of the ten seats, the surprise announcement was for Nagrota constituency in Jammu district where the party has fielded one Abdul Rashid Malik. PDP patron and former Chief Minister Mohammad Sayeed is on record having announced the name of MLC Ved Mahajan for this constituency during a public meeting in the area earlier this earlier. Shanti Devi (later nominated as MLA) had contested on Nagrota seat in 2002. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti approved the recommendations of the Party's Parliamentary Affairs Committee to confirm the candidature of 10 candidates. With this, the total number of candidates announced by the party for the 87-member assembly has gone up to 51. The party has not fielded any candidates in Kargil and Nobra constituencies. Shanti Devi will be the party candidate from Jammu East, R K Bali from Jammu West, Surjeet Kaur from Gandhi Nagar, Abdul Rashid Malik from Nagrota and Anita Devi from Samba segment. Other candidates are Noor Mohammad Afzal from Bani, Kirpal Singh from Basohli, Thakur Pritam Singh from Reasi, Sukhdev Shamra from Udhampur and Abdul Rehman Wani from Inderwal segments. A PDP spokesman said the party will soon announce the names of candidates for the rest of the constituencies. |
