India, Bangla ministers undertake joint visit of river sites
9/14/2006 9:45:29 PM

New Delhi, Sep 14: In an effort to sort out disputes over river-water sharing, ministers of India and Bangladesh will undertake a survey of various sites of the water bodies from today.

Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz and his Bangladeshi counterpart Mohd Hafiz will undertake the survey in Tripura.

After the survey over rivers in India, Soz will travel to Bangladesh on Monday to undertake a visit of water bodies jointly with Hafiz.

A decision to carry out the joint survey was taken last month.

India and Bangladesh share 54 rivers and have disputes on all of them except Ganga on which the two countries have water-sharing agreement.

Efforts are underway to firm up water-sharing agreements with regard to all other rivers.

Forward movement has been reported on such an agreement on six rivers.
