| Kidnapping on alarming rise in Valley | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 13: The alarming increase in the kidnapping cases, including young couples eloping from their homes for clandestine marriages, during the last two and a half months has sent shock waves across the valley. According to reports 36 kidnapping cases have been registered in different police stations in the valley since September 1 last, police sources said. "Three dozen kidnapping cases, including mostly young men, stand registered in various police stations across the valley, Srinagar topping the list with 11 cases," sources revealed. The number of elopement cases is believed to be manifold but the dread of social alienation stops many parents from filing complaints in the police station. In the remote areas of the valley where police stations are at an inaccessible distance, such cases rarely find registration and the matter is sorted out locally, sources added. The trend of elopement is gaining momentum with every passing day and the increase in it stands 5% as against the previous year which manifests the epidemic nature of this malady. "It needs a strong cure and that is severe punishment to the kidnappers or elopers. If there is mutual consent on the part of elopers, they must be dealt with sternly as elopement sets wrong precedent for the next generation," Abdul Razaq Bhat, a college lecturer aid. There are some kidnapping cases wherein the honour and life of an innocent is put at risk or sometimes trampled upon. The recent case being that of an ill- fated girl who boarded a vehicle only to find herself surrounded by wolves and had to pay the price with life to uphold her chastity. "My whole frame shakes with a shudder to watch young girls being exploited in the valley of saints. Let there be a law which advocates at least 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for one who proves guilty of attacking the honour of an innocent lady," Nazir Ahmad, a religious cleric, said. |
