| Farooq’s power lust disastrous for J&K: Qarra | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT TANGMARG, Nov 13: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the use of excessive force and suppressive measures by the State machinery in dealing with the prevailing situation is bound to prove harmful as such tactics would only intensify the deepening alienation and distrust. Addressing a day-long workers convention at Lolpora, today, senior PDP leader Tariq Hameed Karra said the reports of use of excessive force against the political activists and youth through arrests and intimidation is a rebuff to the State's commitment on freedom of expression and liberty. "If immediate corrective measures are not taken and sufficient democratic space is not provided to all sections of the society, the present atmosphere of anger might get intensified further," he said and cautioned that mishandling of this sensitive situation would, to the detriment of the peace efforts, weaken the people's confidence in the democratic institutions. Squarely blaming the National Conference (NC) for imposing elections on the people amid a difficult situation, Karra said the time has come to rid Jammu & Kashmir of the recurrent follies of this party for good so that in future nobody dares to trade the State's honor and dignity for power. "In their lust for power NC leaders have not only traded the people's dignity, but the State's political and economic interests as well," he said and added that the times have changed now and the people won't allow the NC leaders to barter the State's interests anymore. Expressing surprise over the latest statement of NC Patron Dr Farooq Abdullah at a Hindu religious congregation in Muradabad (UP) wherein he (Dr Abdullah) offered to hand-over 8000 kanals of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), Karra said Farooq's lust for power would once again lead, not only NC, but the whole State, from one disaster to another. "Dr Abdullah has run out of all credibility among the masses and his power-struggle with his son is now an open secret," he said. "What in fact the NC has done over the years, was just exploiting the faith and innocence of the people and make personal fortunes out of the sacred mandate," Karra said and added that the reported open auction of mandates by the NC leaders for the upcoming polls, should prove an eye-opener for the people. "What justice the party would do with the people, when it is even opening its innings with the worst kind of political corruption," he said. Addressing the convention, senior PDP leader Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari said the PDP's vision of a politically stable and economically vibrant Jammu & Kashmir, outlined in the party's Self-Rule document, offers the most viable solution to amicably resolve this 60 year old Kashmir issue. He said after having exploited the gullible people of the State for years on Rai Shumari, NC has now even dumped the Autonomy formula to please its godfathers in Delhi. He said having shelved their political agenda, under whatever compulsion, the NC leaders have now started harping on the rhetoric of development agenda to hoodwink the masses. "But having lost their credibility, the NC leaders are finding no takers for their latest political tantrum," he said. PDP leader Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Sheikh also addressed the convention. |
