No manifesto for animals, wildlife
11/13/2008 10:25:54 PM
With setting in of election season people in Jammu and Kashmir are being subjected to hundreds and thousands of promises in the manifestos of political parties. It would have been prudent if any party had included protection of forests and wildlife in their manifesto. Every now and then we get to hear about killings of wild and rare animals in different parts of state. This is highly unbecoming for a state like Jammu and Kashmir which always seeks peace very desperately. In disciplined and sensible countries of world the wildlife is protected and cared more than the human life. However, in a place where there is every risk of humans become endangered species, talking about preservation of Wild Life sounds absurd. The pace with which humans are falling prey to bullets, IEDs and grenades on a daily basis is alarming and unfortunately nothing is being done to save the lives. Politics of death is what has become order of the death and every new death serves as oxygen for the politicians who are desperate to keep the pot boiling. It is the troubled status of Kashmir that has given unaccountable powers to the so-called mainstream politicians and undeserved reputation, wealth and status to the so called separatists. Both the factions therefore want the trouble to continue and never miss any opportunity to instigate the situation. In such a scenario discussing and celebrating Wild Life doesn’t carry much weight but as the lives of these animals too are necessary for environmental and ecological balance, need is to take special care of these, no matter whether anyone takes care of human life or not. Like other parts of the country, Jammu and Kashmir too observes Wild Life Week. The concerned department gets busy launching an awareness campaign to make people aware about the importance of Wild Life for human life (interestingly the campaign ends when the week ends and is resumed a year later during the same week again). Despite this entire funfair, the question arises that whether the government here is really sensitive to the preservation of Wild Life or as insensitive towards it as it is towards Human Life? Portions of National Park were transformed by then government into a golf course rechristened as Royal Spring Golf Course in complete violation of norms. However, the Supreme Court giving some concession to the State government agreed to denotify the area subject the government fulfilled some directives. Years passed and the government is yet to do as desired by the SC. And interestingly, as reports suggest the State government has not erred in not adhering to the court directives, it has of late started fiddling with the wild animals there and is dislocating the same to ensure that golfers have a hassle-free game. From RSGC the animals are being dropped in the forests of Pahalgam, Tangmarg and Qazigund. As the displaced Bears found the new locations alien, they move towards human habitat thus triggering human-animal conflict. Scores of people in these areas were injured and some of them even killed during these conflicts. And even in some cases animals too got killed in these clashes. By displacing these animals the golf lovers therefore have put to risk the lives of both animals as well as human beings. In the backdrop of this animal, as well as, human unfriendly attitude, let government answer how much justified it is in celebrating Wild Life week.
