| Omar’s caravan stoned in Ganderbal | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 13: National Conference President Omar Abdullah has been going around Ganderbal constituency telling people that he is back after learning lessons of 2002 elections but people are not quite receptive to his innocent words. Election campaigning between rival National Conference and Congress at the prestigious Ganderbal Assembly turned ugly when some supporters of Congress pelted stones at the motorcade of Omar Abdullah, triggering clashes. Police had to resort to cane-charging and later burst teargas shells to disperse supporters of the two rival parties at Barsu village in Ganderbal, 30 km from here. The National Conference President Omar Abdullah had crossed the area when the supporters of the two parties fought pitched battles. Omar, contesting assembly polls from the Ganderbal constituency, was campaigning in the area and pass through Barsu village where Congress Candidate Sheikh Ishfaq Ahmad was holding a public meeting, they said. As soon as the Congress workers came to know about the arrival of Omar in the area, they moved towards his motorcade forcing the police to take action. Omar, who contested unsuccessfully from this constituency in 2002, sought to downplay the incident saying all this happens in a democracy. Meanwhile, an NC spokesman quoted Omar Abdullah as saying that National Conference has learnt its lesson after the 2002 defeat. Addressing a series of road side meetings in his constituency Gandarbal here today Omar said people of the state were annoyed with National Conference in 2002 because of the certain mistakes committed by the party. He said the party if voted to power will not commit those mistakes again and live upto the expectations of the people of the state and shall put in untiring efforts to fulfill their aspirations. Addressing a well attended public meeting at Wakura, Omar said if voted to power National Conference will come out with a special package for employment of the youth and shall open new avenues for the young unemployed and ensure that in each household of the state there is atleast one earning hand who can sustain the family and shoulder its responsibilities. Omar also promised that the National Conference after coming to power will fill the 40,000 posts lying vacant in various government departments through a fast track recruitment drive. Omar said his party unlike the PDP & Congress does not believe in hollow slogans and false promises and as such he and his colleagues will never make promises that the party cannot live upto.
