| POLICE PUT ON ALERT IN KASHMIR | | | Srinagar,September 14 :- The police have been put on an alert in the Kashmir valley for meeting any eventuality following Pope Benedict XVI’s reference to Prophet Mohammad during a speech he had delivered at a university in Germany. The police have already seized copies of those national newspapers which had reported the speech of the Pope. Official sources said that wireless messages were sent to senior police officers to keep several companies of the Armed police ready to deal with any reaction to the Pope’s critical remarks about Islam while arguing that no religion preached Jehad and violence. In his speech the Pope had referred to a conversation between 14th century Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos and a Persian scholar quoting that the Emperor had told the Persian scholar that Prophet Mohammad had not brought anything that was new except that his command to spread by sword which he preached. Official sources told Kashmir Independent Press on Thursday that such a far-fetched reference could incite the devout muslims and hence the police had been put on a high alert. The sources said that since the situation in the Kashmir valley has been fluid for over a decade the police had to take in hand measures that would prevent antisocial elements from kicking up violence when the issue touched by the Poe was very sensitive. |
