| We must find remedies for all that has gone wrong: Vohra to children | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 14: Anguished over severe strains caused to the composite ethos of Jammu and Kashmir during the recent disturbances, Governor, N N Vohra, today underscored the need for collective and harmonious approach for resolving all issues, keeping in view the State’s glorious socio cultural traditions. “We have to reassert ourselves and find remedies to cure all that has gone wrong”, Vohra said, adding that the State has to progress faster than other States of the country, as it is blessed with enormous potential and resources. Addressing a function, held in observance of the Children’s Day, marking the birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, here this morning, the Governor described Jammu and Kashmir as the most beautiful State of India and a gorgeous place in the world. “It is a great tragedy that we have not been able to fully utilize the available potential and resources for the benefit of common man”, he lamented. In this context, Vohra made a mention of the abundant tourism potential, especially mountaineering, and suggested this to be constructively married with the youth movement for giving a tremendous fillip to adventure tourism. “We have to optimize possibilities existing in the State and channelizing all our resources to enhance progress and prosperity of the people”, he maintained. Vohra assured the maximum possible support to the youth movement and hoped that the youngsters from all over the State, especially from the relatively neglected areas, would participate in various activities aimed at building character and developing versatility in different spheres. He exuded confidence that the youth will work with devotion and loyalty towards nation building. The Governor paid rich tribute to Pt Jawaharlal Nehru for his historical contribution in laying the sound foundations of parliamentary democracy, good governance, secularism and communal harmony in the country during his 17 years’ stewardship. He also referred to his love for children and the vital role played by him in building the youth movement, saying that Pandit Nehru always looked upon the youth as the future leaders of the country. Vohra said that the Children’s Day revives the memories of a great and visionary leader, who envisioned a progressive, forward looking and a dynamic India which could play a more effective and dynamic role in the comity of nations. In his key note address, Dr Harish K Saxena, National Chairman Youth Hostel Association of India (YHAI), dwelt on the background of the movement, saying that it had been started by a German school teacher, Richard Shermann, in 1909 with the avowed objective of promoting contacts between rural and urban youth. He said that YHAI came into existence in India in 1949 due to the committed efforts of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru and has flourished as a great movement since then. Mohammed Shaffi Pandit, National President, YHAI, in his presidential address, underlined the need for promoting better understanding amongst the various sections of the people in Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, the Governor and the functionaries of YHAI paid floral tributes to Pt Nehru. Vohra also presented Nehru Youth Medals to Youth Hostellers from all over the State. The State Chairman, YHAI, S P Verma, dwelt on the activities of the Association in Jammu and Kashmir while K K Gandotra, Vice President, presented vote of thanks. Dr Taran Singh, State Secretary, YHAI, anchored the function. To mark the occasion, tiny tots of various schools, clad in Khadi outfits and supported by Nehru caps, presented roses to the Governor. |
