| CS calls for sustained campaign against AIDS | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 14: Chief Secretary Mr. S. S. Kapur has stressed the need for a sustained awareness campaign to curb the menace of life threatening diseases like Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The Chief Secretary was addressing the Governing Body Meeting of J&K State AIDS Prevention & Control Society here today. Mr. Kapur further stressed on testing of individuals of the high risk group at regular intervals which would be carried out in different social strata and also the increase in the frequency of the same. He said that the follow up of the different cases so detected should also be done so as to get a regular feedback about the same. The meeting was told that under National AIDS Control Programme (NACP-II) Technical Support Units (TSU) have been established in few states for strengthening the implementation of various components of NACP in general and targeted intervention projects in particular. TSUs will be independent entities to be set up by various Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), who will work in close coordination with state AIDS Control Society for building capacities required for the field agencies involved in the implementation of NACP in the State. It was also disclosed that under NACP-III capacity building is being strengthened at every level of National AIDS Control Programme. In this regard, National Aids Control Organization (NACO) has made intensive efforts for identifying agencies all across the country for setting up of State Training and Resource Centre in each state. The objective of setting up these centres is building capacities of implementing agencies at ground level for smooth implementation of the programme, particularly in the context of targeted intervention projects. The scaling of targeted intervention projects implemented by the NGOs has been increased and 9 projects have been got sanctioned in the annual action plan, the meeting was told. The meeting was also told that the Jammu and Kashmir AIDS Prevention and Control Society has already trained 1200 Anganwari workers, 1800 panches and sarpanches and is also training these resource personnel to spread awareness about the preventive measures regarding AIDS across the state. The meeting was attended by the Commissioner Secretary Health and Education Department, Director General Finance (Budget), Director Health Services, Jammu, Principal, Medical College, Jammu and the Project Director J&K AIDS Prevention and Control Society. |
