| Sana helps Commerce College retains chess trophy | | Inter-college competitions | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 14: Government SPMR College of Commerce has retained the women’s championship trophy after Sana Khan defeated Geetika Slathia in the `best of best’ match in the annual inter-college Chess competitions organized by Department of Physical Education, University of Jammu, here today.
Sana won both her matches to help Commerce College make it a 3-2 win over of Government College for Women (GCW), Parade. In her earlier game, Sana trounced Rashmi Choudhary.
Earlier, Huma Khan won her match against Mehak to help Commerce College force a draw. However, Rupali Mahajan and Driti Chandan lost their games to Geetika Slathia and Palvi Jojra of GCW Parade respectively.
Meanwhile, in men’s semi-finals, defending champions, Government Degree College Udhampur suffered a defeat in the hands of GGM Science College 2.5-1.5 points. In the second semi-final, Government SPMR College of Commerce trounced Dogra Law College 4-0. Now, the final shall be played between Commerce College and Science College at 10 am tomorrow.
The reason behind second consecutive title in women’s section and men team’s entry into the final was presence of state chess champion, Sumit Grower in the Commerce College team. A second year student, Sumit has helped team improve the game.
Today’s matches were conducted, under the supervision of S P Sharma, by Sushil Sawhney and Ajit Kumar.
