Don’t ask for moon, everything else BJP has
11/14/2008 11:33:41 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 14: At last, the BJP appears to have come of age. A document which does not carry an aggressive demand for removal of Article 370 and all other smaller signs of special status to Jammu and Kashmir can not be from BJP.
When party’s only three visible faces in the state –Ashok Khajuria, Chaman Lal and Nirmal Singh –released the manifesto for ensuing elections, its obvious slang “the abrogation of Article 370, the take over of Pakistan occupied Kashmir” were cryptically missing from 20-odd-page hastily written document.
Interestingly, besides these three agenda which form heart and soul of BJP, ask for any thing and the manifesto has it. A look at the manifesto reveals that the BJP has just stopped short of promising moon while everything else “including near home posting to teachers” is on the agenda, “if BJP is voted to power”.
A single liner on its traditional agenda can, however, be subtly read on Page 6. “The BJP has already rejected outright and exposed their politics of 370, autonomy, self rule, demilitarization, porous and irrelevant borders, appeasement and emotional blackmail and registered its emphatic opposition to any move that is calculated to weaken the Indian sovereignty and authority in Kashmir”. Though the kind of (English) language used here does not make out a clear meaning but an idea can be drawn on what BJP has sought to covey in this paragraph of manifesto. “Probably, that such issues (Article 370 etc) already stood rejected”, decodes an “expert”.
The main gist of the manifesto apparently draws its strength from the Amarnath land row agitation. The manifesto has repeatedly taken reference from the agitation to make a point that “empowerment of Jammu is a must”. While the manifesto throughout talks about Jammu and the alleged discrimination against the region, at the same time it makes an appeal to the Kashmiris to “emulate Muslims” in rest of country and give BJP a chance to govern.
BJP has made 124 promises in its 16-point manifesto which also calls for rehabilitation of Baridars –a culture abolished by party’s senior leader and then J&K Governor Jagmohan on formation of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Party also promises broad research on history and culture of Jammu region and setting up a Commission against Cow Slaughter.
Renaming of Jammu University as Maharaja Gulab Singh University and Engineering College as Pandit Premnath Dogra College of Engineering and Technology are other important promises in the manifesto.
