Rs 22 lakh more released for Wullar boat tragedy victims' kin

SRINAGAR, SEP 14 Jammu and Kashmir government today released an additional Rs 22 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to be disburdsed among families of children who drowned in the Wullar lake boat capsize tragedy, an official spokesman said here.

Each bereaved family would get Rs one lakh, he said. With the disbursement of second installment of ex-gratia, each affected families would get a total of Rs two lakh since the government had disbursed Rs 1 lakh each to bereaved families soon after the incident.

The spokesman said a cheque for Rs 22 lakh had been handed over to Kupwara Deputy Commissioner Abdul Majid Khanday for immediate disbursement among the affected families.

The children who died in the tragedy in May last were students of Burning Candle School of Handwara and had taken a joyride on the boat that capsized in the lake.

An inquiry had held four Navy personnel and school Principal responsible for the tragedy.
