Mirpur(PaK), Nov 15: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has stated that PPP government is steadily moving to find an honorable solution to the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the wishes of Kashmiri people.
“The opening of the cross LoC trade recently is just one step to bring the Kashmiris together. Who knows this step for the wellbeing of Kashmiris might turn out to be a lead forward for ushering in peace and prosperity in the whole region”, the President said in a message read on the occasion of national conference held in memory of an eminent intellectual, scholar and author Prof. Khan Zaman Mirza here.
The conference was organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Human Rights Commission.
President Zardari in his message further stated that “after all there are instances in history when a small step taken today turns out to be a giant lead forward tomorrow for mankind”.
He said “We believe that the policy of soft borders - so that the people of the two parts of Kashmir can meet, travel and do business - can be pursued without compromising on the issue of Kashmir”.
The President said that Pakistan believes that soft borders and greater contacts between the peoples will pave the way for a final settlement of the dispute in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiris people.
“An honourable and peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute is what Professor Khan Zaman Mirza also dreamt of”, he added.
Paying rich tributes to late Prof. Khan Zaman Mirza, also a senior educationist of his time, the President of Pakistan said that Prof. Mirza has earned a name not only as a researcher and scholar of the history and genesis of Kashmir dispute but also as a democrat who waged struggle against dictatorship and tyranny.
“Late Prof. Mirza was the founder director of the institute of Kashmir studies and built a great archive on Kashmir. Researchers and scholars have since greatly benefitted from this archive”, President Zardari said in his message.
He said Prof. Khan Zaman Mirza was a great educationist as well. He not only built a storehouse of reference material on the freedom struggle but also shared it with others ungrudgingly. “For his humanity and scholarship he earned respect and admiration of many”, the President said.
The President said during his life, the late professor nurtured the dream of witnessing an honorable resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
“Unfortunately Prof. Mirza did not live long to see that dream come true. But his soul would be content with the thought that the PPP government is steadily moving to find an honorable settlement of the Kashmir issue in line with Kashmiris aspirations”, he added.
‘Asif Ali Zardari praised the Jammu & Kashmir Human Rights Commission for organizing the national reference in memory of Prof. Khan Zaman Mirza.
