| Chaman questions advantages of Art 370 | | | Early Times Report Jammu, November 15: Pledging to continue the struggle for closer ties between this state and rest of India, Bhartia Janta Party has asked the Congress, National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party to explain that how the so-called separate status granted under Article 370 has been beneficial to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and why this Temporary Provision is being retained even after over 58 years of its incorporation in the Indian Constitution. Addressing a meeting of the party activists at Toph Sher Khanian in the outskirts of Jammu city on Friday, Senior BJP leader Chaman Lal Gupta said that Article 370 has proved to be very harmful for the people of Jammu and Kashmir as the state has lagged behind in the field of progress and development. "This provision has proved quite harmful not only to the interest of the people of the state but also to the national interests. This was the root cause of growth of secessionism, fundamentalism and terrorism in addition to so many other problems," he said and added that the democratic rights of the people were curtailed as there were no proper functioning of basic democracies including the Panchayats, local bodies and other such institutions. He further said that the so-called Special Status was responsible for abuse of central funds, little growth of Industrial Sector and ever increasing unemployment despite massive spending. Contesting the claims of progress and prosperity brought about by the Ghulam Nabi Azad led coalition during the past years, Prof. Gupta said this coalition as per the statement of the former Finance Minister, spent Rs. 87000 crores during the period of six years but the ground realities expose that there was hardly any field where the problems have not been multiplied.
