| Bureaucrats should not join politics soon after retirement: CEC | | | AGENCIES NEW DELHI, Nov 16: Civil servants should not join politics within five years of retirement or resignation, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N Gopalaswami said on Saturday. "It should be...personally yes," Gopalaswami told a channel when asked whether there should be such a bar on civil servants joining politics for five years after they retire from their service. "We had sent a series of suggestions to the government as part of the electoral reforms. One of the suggestions was that if somebody was facing criminal case, then he or she should not be allowed to contest," he said. Replying to a question, the CEC said no one would oppose debarring convicted criminals from contesting elections. "I agree there cannot be any two opinions on that. No body would oppose it to debar them from contesting". Election Commissioner S Y Qureshi said the Commission has even favoured barring candidates to contest elections, if court orders framing of charges against him. Another Election Commissioner Navin Chawla said the Commission has even suggested that if somebody is convicted by Sessions Court on serious offence he or she should not be given tickets till the person wins in the appeal. However, the final decision will have to be taken by Parliament, he said. Asked whether there should be re-polling among the leading candidates if they fail to get more than 50 percent votes in the election, Qureshi favoured the idea. |
