JSM alleges discrepancies in voter lists
11/16/2008 10:17:23 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 16: Strongly criticizing Election Commission of India for not providing voter lists with accurate information of all the voters, Jammu State Morcha(P) today expressed surprise that after spending such a lot of time and money on the preparation of updated electoral rolls none of these rolls carries accurate information regarding the voters, thus causing confusion to the voters. The established and allotted house numbers of the housing boards, JDA and other societies have been discarded and fresh “Chulla” numbers have been arbitrarily allotted instead by the authorities responsible for preparing these voter lists, the Morcha alleged.
Addressing media persons here today, Morcha President Virender Gupta said that these house numbers have been taken on record in the voter lists without even informing the house owners of this change and without even making them public. The Election Commission of India (CEC) and Chief Electoral Officer J&K (CEO) have a moral duty to explain to the public of J&K as to who has ordered the re-numbering of the houses by these “CHULLA” numbers and how these numbers have been allotted and incorporated in the Voters list and how does this system lead to better efficiency in the polling process?
Gupta said the voter lists in Hindi and English of all constituencies are also not complete and systematic and added that voter lists of large number of polling booths have still not been completed. These incomplete lists, that too only in Hindi language, have been made available only on Nov 14 while the list in English is still under preparation. Whatever voters’ lists have been issued are full of mistakes with regard to names and details of the voters. Names of a number of voters have been deleted / omitted in these new lists for no reasons whatsoever, he alleged and said that the process for issuing EPIC cards has been totally stopped since June last.
He said the JSM (P) feels that all these discrepancies in the voters list will deny the genuine voters to exercise their constitutional right because of the irrational and irresponsible functioning of the ECI, besides giving rise to the bogus voting.
Capt. Anil Gour (Retd), B. Khajuria, Divender Singh Jamwal, and Surinder Sharma were also present at the press conference.
