Gen Sinha at it again
Mufti wants Sinha’s Pandey ‘links’ probed; Farooq seeks explanation from Ex-Governor
11/16/2008 10:25:57 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 16: Nearly six months after he bade adieu to the Raj Bhawan, the former Governor Lt Gen (retd) SK Sinha still continues to inspire the politics of controversies in Jammu and Kashmir which is now reaching a crescendo in the middle of poll season.
Two former Chief Ministers –Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Dr Farooq Abdullah –have sought a probe into alleged ‘links’ of Gen Sinha with self-styled seer Dayanand Pandey who is being questioned in connection with blasts in Malegaon, Nanded and Samjhauta express.
Officers of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad probing the case have been quoted by the agencies as saying that Dayanand Pandey was an official guest of then Governor Sinha and once he stayed in the Raj Bhawan in 2007. However, Gen Sinha, who currently resides in New Delhi has categorically rubbished there reports saying that he never met Pandey.
The People's Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today alleged that self-styled religious guru Dayanand Pandey, arrested in connection with Malegaon blasts, stayed as a guest of then Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S K Sinha. Pandey, who frequently visited the state, was a guest of the former Governor and stayed at the Raj Bhawan in Srinagar in 2007, PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed told a press conference here.
This showed Pandey's "connections" with the ex-Governor and this should be probed, the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister said. "Frequent visits by Pandey to the state and his being entertained by the former Governor raises suspicion...," Sayeed said.
The matter needed to be probed in the background of alleged involvement of some army officers in the blasts, he said. Sayeed said the alleged involvement of seers and army officers in Malegaon blasts was dangerous, adding authorities should also probe the "linkage" of such elements with Kashmir militancy.
Meanwhile another former Chief Minister and the National Conference Chief Ministerial candidate Farooq Abdullah has sought explanation from former Sinha for his alleged closeness with Pandey.
Talking to reporters at his residence, Dr Abdullah described the involvement of Army officers and seers in Malegaon blast as ''dangerous (for country)'' and said, '' Lt Gen Sinha should explain his reported closeness with Dayanand Pandey.'' The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister expressed concern over the revelation about explosives recovered from militants in Kashmir being used for terrorist activities outside in the country.
Dr Abdullah appealed to the Army to conduct its own inquiry in the malegaon blast case and award explanatory punishment to the soldiers involved in such activities.
He also criticised the BJP for banking on Hindu agenda for mere political gains. ''BJP kept raising 'Ram Janambhumi issue', but never spoke a single word when came to power at the Centre'', Dr Abdullah said.
