| Election sidelights | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 17: Enthusiasm among voters was seen at the highest peak at 2-Koragbal polling station in Gurez constituency where out of total 79 electors, 78 exercised their franchise upto 11 A.M. At 97-Nogam E polling booth in Sonawari constituency centurian Muhammad Ibrahim Dar was among the first voters to cast his vote. Dar is a privileged witness of all the electoral exercises undertaken in the State since 1957 when the first general elections were held in J&K. The ongoing polls are the 10th general elections being held in the State. At Kunusa-1, a polling booth in Bandipora constituency, 85 year old Ghulam Ahmad Laway exercised his franchise. At Ajote polling station in Poonch-Haveli constituency, 90 year old Mohammad Sain exercised his right to franchise while at Karmara polling station near LoC, 75 year old Jan Bibi was among the first electors to cast her vote. Young Inderjeet Kour, 20 and Ghazala 20, cast their votes for the first time at Purani Poonch polling station and Karmara polling station near LoC respectively in Poonch-Haveli constituency. Both of them expressed happiness on exercising their right to franchise for the first time. At 36-Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Kargil, in the first two hours of voting about 695 women exercised their franchise out of the total 1234 voters. Principal of the Institute Smt. Tahira Bano who is on magisterial duty was the first to cast the vote in the polling station. In the Lassana polling station of Surankote, women voters outnumbered men as upto 1.30 p.m. out of 234 votes polled, 186 were female and 48 male. In the Gohled polling station of Mendhar Constituency, Safia Begum 87 years old woman and Jamal-ud-Din 98 years, Nanagenarian cast their vote despite severe cold. Rehmatulla Mir, 75 of Indarkoot payeen Bandipora today left for Holy Haj pilgrimage after casting his vote. Gulam Ahmad Laway in his early nineties exercise his franchise at Ashtangoo,Bandipora. Ravinder Nath, along with his family members Shikha and Madhu, the lone Hindu family in Kargil, exercised their right to vote today at polling station 37 in Kargil. |
