| Chopra's murder case | | HC allows police to file status report within week's time | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov17: Justice JP Singh of J&K High Court Jammu Wing today directed Additional Advocate General S C Gupta to supply a copy of the status report on the Chopra murder case to the counsel appearing for the petitioners before filling it in the court. This direction was passed today by the court when Additional Advocate General SC Gupta, appearing with Mubassir Latif Superintendent of Police, member of the Special Investigating Team, submitted that substantial part of the investigation has been completed and status report shall be filed during the course of this week. Earlier, the High Court had granted final opportunity of one month to the Investigating Agency to complete the investigation in the much publicized Chopra family murder case with the directions that in case the needful is not done the option of sending the matter to CBI shall be considered. It is worthwhile to mention here that in a much publicized murder case of RB Chopra, his wife Madhu Chopra, daughter Saloni Chopra, servant and driver on September 18, 2006 at 10.30 PM in Trikuta Nagar, a case u/s 302 RPC was registered and investigation was started by the SHO Trikuta Nagar. The special team constituted to investigate the gruesome murder of five members of a family worked on various possible grounds and in this behalf examined more than 150 suspects. The SIT looked into every possible reason for the murder of RB Chopra and other members of his family which covered business aspects as well as personnel rivalry with RB Chopra and his family. After thorough investigation the SIT had come to the conclusion that the offence has been committed by the members of criminal tribes of Madhya Pradesh. However, Puneet Chopra, son of the deceased RB Chopra, not satisfied with the investigation being conducted by the SIT demanded handing over the investigation to the CBI. The state Government on September 25, 2006 requested the Union of India to entrust the investigation of the case to CBI. The matter was examined by the CBI also, but they have expressed their inability to take up the investigation on the ground that the case was local in nature and did not require investigation by the CBI.
