| Army holds closed door seminar | | Human Rights & Media? | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 18: The Army today organized a ‘closed door’ seminar on human rights at Reasi where issues including legal implications and media role were discussed. Some media persons and defence analysts were brought in from New Delhi and other places to discuss human rights issues with Army. There was, however, no involvement or participation of the local media persons for sharing ground experiences in the seminar which went high on the profile of experts. According to an Army handout, noted author Balraj Puri was also one of the speakers in the seminar which the spokesman said, was organized by Counter Insurgency Forces “aiming at upholding the customs and norms of Human Rights in a democratic society and the legislative aspects controlling the deployment of the Armed Forces and the issue concerning the intricacies of Media interaction on Human Rights”. The seminar was inaugurated by Lieutenant General RK Swamy, GOC White Knight Corps. Legal issues and implications related to Human Rights in prevailing socio-politico-military environment, the Role of Media, Laws of Armed Conflict, Human Rights as applicable to insurgency areas/Low Intensity Conflict Operations, problems faced in implementation of Human Rights, Prevention of Human Rights Violations and challenges for Armed Forces and Media were some of the issues discussed during the seminar. The seminar concluded with interactive sessions in which the participants and audience freely expressed their views. The keynote address was delivered by GOC White Knight Corps. Nitin Gokhale, Senior Editor, Defence and Strategic Affairs of NDTV, Ravi Nair, Executive Director South Asia HRDC, Brigadier CS Nair, Deputy Judge Advocate General, Headquarters Northern Command, and Anil Shorey, Senior Defence Analyst USI, New Delhi were the eminent speakers who participated in the seminar. |
