| SKUAST holds mushroom training | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 18: The week long model training course on refinement and promotion of round the year cultivation of Mushroom for self employment and sponsored by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation was inaugurated by Dr. B.Mishra, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST here today. The agriculture officers from states of Mizoram, Manipur, Jharkhand, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir are attending the course. The course will conclude on November 24 and a compendium covering the lectures to be covered during the training was also released on the occasion In his inaugural address Dr. Mishra said that Indian agriculture supports 59% of its nearly 1.1 billion population and possesses only 2.3% of the global land. Due to the fast urbanization and ever increasing population, the per capita availability of the agricultural land is declining which has led to the migration of rural youth and farmers to urban areas. He said that in spite of record food production of 230.67 million tones last year, we need to supplement the nutritional security and eradicate hidden hunger. Mushroom, because of rich source of protein, essential amino acids, and minerals, low in starch glucose fat and devoid of cholesterol has been preferred globally in about 100 countries with production of more than 12 million tones per annum. In Jammu province, out of more than 750 tonnes of mushrooms produced annually, more than 95% share is of button mushroom. He urged upon the farmers and rural youth of the state to adopt its cultivation which would become a source of their additional income as the climatic conditions and abundant availability of substrates provide good scope for mushroom farming around the year. |
