SRINAGAR, Nov 18: A total of 280 candidates are in the fray for the fourth phase of assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir's four districts after 22 nomination papers were rejected during scrutiny on Tuesday.
In the fourth phase, 18 constituencies in Baramulla, Budgam, Udhampur and Reasi districts are going to polls on December 7, official sources said.
Nomination papers of seven candidates were rejected in as many constituencies of Baramulla district, followed by six in five constituencies of Budgam, five in three segments of Reasi and four in three of Udhampur district.
November 20 is the last date for withdrawal of papers. Baramulla district in North Kashmir accounted for the highest number of 117 candidates, followed by 71 in Central Kashmir Budgam, the sources said.
Forty eight candidates are in the fray in Udhampur district of Jammu and 44 in nearby Reasi district.
Prominent in the contest are former ministers Taj Mohiuddin (Cong) Mohammad Dilawr Mir (PDP), Abdul Gani Vakil (Cong), PDF chairman Hakim Mohammad Yasin, PDP vice president Maulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig.
The first of the seven-phase polling was yesterday, in which 10 constituencies in four districts went to polls.
