| Azad seeks votes to complete 'unfinished' tasks | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 19: Campaigning for the second phase of polls in Jammu and Kashmir, former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has sought votes on the development plank to accomplish the 'unfinished tasks' in the state. Addressing an election rally at Sunderbani town in Nowshera constituency of Rajouri district yesterday, Azad said the party would accomplish the unfinished tasks, if voted to power in the ongoing seven-phase elections. The Congress leader listed out development measures taken up by the previous coalition government and said construction of a bridge over river Chenab at Akhnoor had been a boon to the people in Rajouri and Poonch. He also spoke about the upgradation of Government Medical College (GMC) to the level of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and construction of yatri bhawan for Amarnath pilgrims at Jammu. He said the government had implemented the recommendation of Wazir Commission on demarcation of districts and created eight districts -- four each in Jammu and Kashmir regions. As a poll promise, Azad said the party would take initiatives to open a degree college at Sunderbani and set up an emergency hospital there. Besides, district level boards would be constituted for ensuring fast recruitment. Eleven constituencies -- four in Jammu region and seven in Kashmir -- are going to polls in the second phase of polling on November 23. Addressing public meetings at Darhal, Kalakote, Bajwal and Rajouri, Azad today said, the two-and-a-half years of Congress-led rule was a period of normalcy and growth. "This was the period when least number of security personnel were killed and almost negligible number of political leaders were eliminated by militants." Taking a dig on former coalition partner PDP, the Congress leader said, the government could not fulfil the promises in the 2002 manifesto as PDP withdrew from the government. Referring to the expansion in road networks during his tenure Azad said, Rajouri/Poonch districts were now road-linked to PoK through bus service. Besides, people there would be able to travel to the valley after the completion of Mughal road. As election promises, the former chief minister said, stipend would be given to educated unemployed youth and retirement age of government employees enhanced from 58 years to 60. |
