| Documentary in Kashmiri language screened at Tehran fest | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 19: A first-time documentary in Kashmiri language dealing with the issue of child labour in the Valley was among the two Indian entries at the recently- concluded Tehran International Short Film Festival. "The Lost Childhood", the first documentary in Kashmiri, was received well by the audience at the international competition section of the festival held from November 12-17, director Bilal A Jan said.Of the 82 entries for the festival, only two were from India, Jan told PTI. He said some films from the Valley might have made it to the big grade, but those movies were in languages other than Kashmiri."It is an honour for our native language," he said. The festival was organised by the Iranian Young Cinema Society. "The Lost Childhood" was selected for the 10th Mumbai International Film Festival in the special screening in Indian national category. According to Jan, child labour in the Valley has become more of an economic problem than social. He said financial support to the needy can help the state in getting rid of this menace. According to the 2001 census, there are over 1,75,000 child labourers in Jammu and Kashmir. At present the number of child labourers in the Valley alone may be around two lakh, he claimed. He said Kashmiri children are employed in shawl and carpet industries and also work in repair shops. He said the film, produced by M Maqbool Lone, has no voice-over or commentary and every shot and scene is self explanatory and depicts the problem of children. |
