| Seminar on folk, contemporary theatre concludes | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 20: To strike a chord with theatre goers, an impressive two days seminar on 'folk and contemporary theatre' organized by Academy of Art, Culture and Languages concluded here on Wednesday. The speakers which mostly constituted theatre activists, literary dignitaries and academicians urged state government to take strong initiative to support theatre movement in Kashmir. Former Director General Department of Culture, Mohammad Yusuf Taing presided over the function. Host of dignitaries present on the occasion include renowned theatre activist Kavi Rattan Sharma, eminent playwright Sajood Sailani, Secretary Cultural Academy, Zaffar Iqbal Manhas, theatre activist, B.B Yasir and others. Earlier, in his inaugural address the Secretary Cultural Academy Zaffar Iqbal Manhas, assured that the academy is committed to the overall development of different art genres, be it theatre, music or literature. He underlined the need of cordial relationship among various organizations for the harmonic artistic growth of the state. Academy also announced special package of one lack rupees in favour of the folk theatre artist and poet Ghulam Ali Majboor .More so, Sajood Sailani and Kavi Rattan Sharma were also felicitated on the occasion. Addressing a gathering, Kavi Rattan Sharma drew attention to the historical growth of drama in the state and spoke of how meaningful experimentation in the Kashmiri theatre can influence the art fraternity across the world and become a genre by itself. "Innovation is necessary sometimes, but it should be within traditional art form,'' he emphasized Noted theatre activist Bhawani Bashir Yasir underlined the need to revive, rejuvenate and boost up theatre movement in Kashmir. It is a movement that will grow as people become conscious of their rights to use theatre as a medium of portraying socio- political ills. Yasir stressed the importance of returning the cultural ethos as the basis of theatre. "The onus is on us to preserve and cherish it forever''. Commenting on his long experience as a theatre activist, he said," I vehemently supported the indigenous cultural values and now the time has come to spread the cultural awareness through the medium of theatre,'' Ever since he graduated from the National School of Drama, New Delhi in 1987 he has been actively involved in theatre activities .Yasir maintained that since 1977 he has been spearheading this movement with an aim to promote folk theatre of Kashmir with a modern sensibility to reach its zenith of contemporary scope and standards. |
