Democracy has deep roots
11/20/2008 11:54:17 PM
After a stunning performance in first phase of elections across ten constituencies, the repoll at four polling stations has also set trends. More than 65 per cent polling has been reported in the repolling which went off peacefully. It is the result of increasing trust towards democracy that nearly 70 per cent polling was registered in ten assembly constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir which is burning in the fire of separatists protests. Taking the issue of providing land to Amarnath Shrine Board a dispute arose due to which the Peoples Democratic Party withdrew support to the Ghulam Nabi led Congress coalition Government resulting in a chaos and political uncertainty. There was peaceful atmosphere during the election process carried out under tight security. Voters walked miles and cast their votes braving extreme cold and snowfall in four districts of three regions. They were feeling excited even in severe cold conditions as at many places in Gurez and Ladakh temperatures were falling to sub-zero. Peace loving public of Jammu and Kashmir is sick of separatist politics and militant violence. Pang of people had increased the desire of changing the system and going towards polling booths. As a result the percentage of polling was even more than the national average. Comparative study reveals that vote percentage in the year 2002 was 52, whereas it reached up to 74 per cent in 2008 beyond the imagination. 53 to 57 per cent in Leh, from 54 per cent to 78 per cent in Zanskar, is amazing. In several other areas the vote percentage has increased. It is a big slap for those anti-national elements who have anti- India mentality in the entire valley area. For last two decades the Pakistani planned organisations have made havoc in every house and tried their best to separate the region from the country. The public was sick of these anti-national activities and negative thinking and as a result the people of Jammu and Kashmir took part in large numbers in voting. They need peace, law and order, pucca roads, water and electric supply like basic amenities with honest and powerful government. Literacy rate in comparison to other parts of the country is less. It may be deduced that the National Conference and the Congress governments in earlier years have not done proper work. Now, the lethargic and inactive parties should think that government formed by hook or crook methods has its short term. People cannot be taken for a ride by confusing words like independence. Six phases of election are still pending and there is an optimism of huge turnout. The way people are coming out in political rallies underlines that subsequent phases may register even more voting percentage.
