| Mehbooba takes on Left | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 20: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has shifted constituency and has moved to Shopian district instead of Anantnag which is considered bastion of Mufti family. A decision for Anantnag proper constituency is still pending thus fueling speculations about Peoples Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to contest from there. Mufti represented Pahalgam constituency in the dissolved assembly after sought a by-election. Anantnag constituency was won by Mehbooba in 2002 and the seat fell vacant upon Mehbooba’s election to Lok Sabha in 2004. Yet another safe constituency in South Kashmir, Mehbooba has moved to Wachi which was represented by Mohammad Khalil Naik of Communist Party of India (M) in 2002 elections. Naik is seeking re-election from the same constituency. In another major development, the Peoples Democratic Party axed ticket of its sitting MLA Ghulam Hassan Khan from Shopian constituency. Khan had won in 2002 and remained a Minister for nearly three years. He several times fell out with party leadership on many petty issues and later landed in trouble when was named in the Srinagar sex racket. Party had suspended Khan immediately after his name surfaced in the sex scandal. However, he wooed back to the party in July this year when Ghulam Nabi Azad was to face a floor test in the Legislative Assembly after pull out of Peoples Democratic Party from the government. Sources said, Khan may plunge into fray as independent candidate. Newly created Shopian district has only two constituencies and is going to polls in fifth phase along with Pulwama and Kathua on December 13. A PDP spokesman said that the party president Mehbooba Mufti today gave her assent to the recommendations of the Party's Parliamentary Affairs committee and officially confirmed the candidature of Mehbooba Mufti President J&K PDP for Wachi assembly constituency, Syed Bashir Ahmad for Rajpora, Mohammed Khalil Bandh for Pulwama, Zahoor Ahmad Mir for Pampore, Abdul Razak Zawoora for Shopian and Abdul Hameed Bhat (Kohsheen) for Habakadal Assembly segments. |
