| What does JU want? | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 20: After exhausting his second term, Jammu University Vice Chancellor Prof Amitabh Mattoo was earlier this week told by the Chancellor to continue as the Search Committee could not arrive at a consensus on his successor. However, an ‘unrest’ is prevailing over the campus following ‘inside’ reports that a Professor from Haryana is being appointed as next Vice Chancellor of Jammu University. Some students’ organizations enforced a sort of shut down in the campus resenting any move of appointing an outsider as JU Chancellor. Even as the teaching and non-teaching organizations as well as some student bodies of the Jammu University have been making appeals every day for another term to Prof Mattoo but the minimum they are asking for is a local Vice Chancellor. Over two dozen JU Professors have reportedly written to the Search Committee staking their individual campaigns for the top seat at Campus. The activists of Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association today held a protest demonstration in support of their demand of appointing a local as Vice Chancellor of the University. Boycotting their classes, the students of three departments, lodged a protest demonstration within the University campus and demanded that a local be appointed as the head of the University. The protest was lodged following rumours that Surinder Sharma, native of Haryana, who happens to be close to the state Governor N N Vohra, was being appointed as Vice Chancellor University of Jammu. JURSEA has ‘warned’ the Governor that if the demand for the appointment of local VC was not met, the agitation would be further intensified Vikas Sharma president has said that the protest demonstrations would continue without affecting the studies of the students till its demand was met. Among others who took part in the protest included Kamamldeep, Munish, Neetu, Rakesh Chib, Uday Singh, Sunil Sharma, Vickey, Ajay Singh, Sunny Babber, Fancy, Priyanka and Esha. |
