11/21/2008 12:44:28 AM
Esha Chopra

Work values is a major means by which people develops and maintain their identity, self-concepts largely depends upon what other tell us about ourselves in job as it speaks about attitudes and motivation of employees. Jammu and Kashmir Police is maintaining peace in the state when state is under threat of terrorists for past two decades and enforcement also ensuring law and order situation.
its primary duty is to safe-guard the lives and properties of people and protect them against violence, intimidation oppression and social disorder. Like other social organizations it is the duty of J&K police to prevent, detect, investigate the criminal cases and also to apprehend the criminals for prosecution facing legal cases in the state courts. J&K Police has not only to shown its excellence dealing with the criminals, but it also judged as the best police in the country the way they have tackle the menace of terrorism with the assistance of Army and Paramilitary forces.
The expertise of J&K Police dealing with the terrorism is world known. Though they carry out such duties or service people’s perception about police are quite different. In Police, the collectivistic values are given importance like social, emotional support, interdependence, role oriented, group interest, group-welfare etc. The force behind all the success of the Jammu and Kashmir is its focus on the work values in organization which helps the organization to achieve to its highest. The individual growth also raises in organization like the family Security. Happiness, Equality, Mature love, National Security, Pleasure etc work values also determined by social culture.
In west; the individuals are goal oriented, self interest, materialistic etc; their main target is to finish the culprit i.e., they are focused upon their goal. Even they murdered at the cost of gaining money. On the other hand, East shows interest on self sacrifice emphases on non-materialistic, role oriented etc.
They care about their emotions and the dependent members also. They also committed to their organization but not at the cost of values. The more the commitment, the more its their values. Work values of committed workers are different than others. Committed employees are likely to withdraw, resign and absent from work. Committed employees are willing to make sacrifices for the organizations. Those who are highly committed to work demonstrate a great willingness to share and make the sacrifices required for the organization to thrive. This is particularly important today’s concern for quality services and customer’s satisfaction.
India is a collectivistic society, different organization in India showed collectivistic values. In India according to Hindu code of conduct, this helps maintain order in society. Duty is dharna i.e., conduct that maintain order and balance in an otherwise fluid universe (Sansar). Police is an essential service of the society, to protect life and wealth and also order in society. In the changing scenario, work-values are changing the police personnel become more money-minded and unethical. They are getting money, promotions and fame even though rape cases, dowry cases murder and encounters too. The police personnel in J&K state performing the duties other than policing like acting as personal security officers (PSO) of various VIP’s: getting frustrated. To earn more money in short period of time leads to the increased level of corruption and such act of policemen is creating negative image of police. Some police personnel get favourable and prize posting because of access to power circle and in return they please the person in power.
Cultures also very in defining the role of individual versus the role of the group in a society. In a collectivist culture, the interest of the group tends to prevail over the interest of the individual while in individualistic culture, the interest of the individual prevails over the interest of the group. The Indian’s are collectivists. Perceive themselves as interdependent members of as “in-group”, who share the same fate and responsibility for achievement of work, and they tend to act cooperatively in their groups interest. Culture is also responsible for commitment of the individual, the mission of which includes (strategic direction and intent, goals and objective, vision) constituency which includes (co-ordination and integration, agreement, care-values); Involvement which includes (capability development, team orientation. Empowerment) and Adaptability which deals with (creating change, customer focus and organization learning.)
Gazetted police officers gave individualistic higher preference for professional growth. Gazetted police personnel age and length of service were positively correlated with individualistic value orientation, perceived success and organization commitment for non-gazetted police personnel age and length of service were not significantly contributing to individualistic work value orientation, perceived success and organizational commitment. Age and experience of Gazetted police personnel were contributed positively to their success and commitment where as these were missing among non-gazetted so, in the organization it is important to encourage value conducive to the organization and reward time to time for displaying such value.
Work-values can influence’s ones commitment and success. To understand and enhance commitment it is also necessary to understand work-value orientation of the individual. Top management showed ‘higher individualistic work value orientation. Middle management emphasize lesser on individualistic work-value orientation. Generally, gazetted officer compete with more competent person where as non-gazetted officer probably compete either with colleagues of the same hierarchy. So, more and more individualistic work-value orientation can be encourage by top-management. Changing work values in Jammu and Kashmir negative face of the force and if it is not checked at this state the faith on police will be lost in the society and one can calculate the fate of the place where as non-gazetted officer probably compete either with colleagues of the same hierarchy. So more and more individualist work-value orientation can be encourage by top-management.
Changing work values in Jammu and Kashmir police is bringing negative face of the force and it is not checked at this state the faith on police will be lost in the society and one can calculate the fate of the place where people do not believe on the system which is formed not only to keep law and order in the society and create at atmosphere of confidence and securing in the society.
