| A day goes blank in Govt offices | | Employees boycott work; several injured in protests | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 20: It was a day wasted for the officers of All India Services even as the Governor NN Vohra made good of his time by visiting two neighbouring districts as a complete strike by the state government employees paralyzed office work in the Winter Capital along with all parts of state. Over five lakh employees of the state government today observed a one-day token strike demanding implementation of the recommendations of Sixth Pay Commission and enhancement of retirement age from present 58 years to 60 years. The Governor’s administration tried to persuade the employees that it was helpless due to prevailing Model Code of Conduct but the employees went ahead with what they described as “show of unity”. Though all employees had turned up to their offices to mark attendance but no work was transacted. IAS, IPS and IFS officers attended their offices but could not any work in absence of the subordinate staff. Governor NN Vohra utilized his day by visiting neighbouring districts of Kathua and Samba where he reviewed the poll preparedness. Meanwhile, a arge number of striking state government employees were injured when police used mild lathi charge to disperse their protest march taken out to mark the day long strike. Over five lakh state government employees in all three regions of the state participated in the strike after last minute efforts by the state government to pacify the employees leaders failed to yield any positive results. Employees of fund starved PSUs also participated in the day long strike and vent their ire against the state government for giving them step motherly treatment. The striking employees were mounting pressure on the state government to implement recommendations of the sixth pay commission, enhance retirement age of state government employees from 58 to 60 years and regularization of services of daily wage employees. The use of brutal force by the state police on state government employees has further added fuel to the raging fire. The employees’ leaders have decided to intensify their stir if government failed to concede their demands. Meanwhile, routine work across various state government offices, including government run hospitals minus emergency care services, was paralyzed in response to strike call given by employees’ joint action committee representing all the state government departments and public sector undertakings (PSUs). The out patient departments across various state government run hospitals were closed. The emergency services, however, were kept out of the purview of strike. Over five lakh state government employees were forced to resort to agitation by the state government as their talks failed, leaders of striking employees said outside Press club. The EJAC leaders said that Centre and many states have already implemented the pay panel report but J&K state has not done justice with its employees so far. They urged the state Governor to take a decision in this regard and do justice with over five lakh employees of the State. They said that PSU employees should also be provided justice. The employees’ leaders said that the employees' unions and associations had given several representations to the popular government and also to Governor N N Vohra but the government has not shown any positive response forcing the employees to go on strike. |
