Commission reviews arrangements in Ganderbal

SRINAGAR, Nov 21; Deputy Election Commissioners, Mr. R. Bhattacharya and Mr. R. Bala Krishnan who arrived here yesterday, presided over a high level officers meeting at Ganderbal today.
The meeting was held to review the poll arrangements in the two constituencies of Kangan and Ganderbal going to polls on November 23, 2008 in the IInd phase of J&K Assembly Elections-2008.
Chief Electoral Officer, J&K, Mr. B. R. Sharma, Election Observers, Division Commissioner Kashmir, IGP Kashmir, DIG CKR and Deputy Commissioner, Ganderbal were present in the meeting.
There are 582 migrant voters in Kangan constituency and 738 in Ganderbal. The number of male and female migrant voters in Kangan is 358 and 380 respectively. In Ganderbal constituency, the migrant male and female voters are 298 and 284 respectively.
Regarding the status of polling stations, the meeting was told that 24 polling stations have been declared as sensitive and 57 hypersensitive in Kangan whileas 28 sensitive and 69 hypersensitive polling stations are in Ganderbal constituency.
The meeting was told that all polling stations have been verified by Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers. As many as 18 Auxiliary polling stations have been created in each constituency and all the polling stations have been set up in ground floor.
There are 10 contesting candidates in Kangan and 12 in Ganderbal constituency. In Kangan, Mr. Altaf Ahmad (NC), Mr. Bashir Ahmad Mir (PDP), Mr. Abdul Rashid Ganie (National Panthers Party), Mr. Ghulam Ahmad Rather (Indian National Congress), Mr. Ghulam Mustafa Kassana (Bahujan Samaj Party), Mr. Nazir Ahmad Raina (Bharatiya Janta Party), Mr. Shabir Ahmad Mir (Awami National Conference), Mr. Mohammad Sultan Lone (Janta Party), Mr. Rafiq Ahmad (Independent) and Mr. Mohammad Amin Sofi (Independent) are in the fray.
In Ganderbal Mr. Bashir Ahmad Bhat (Rashtriya Janta Dal), Syed Ali Mohammad Shah (Independent), Sheikh Ishfaq Ahmad (INC), Mr. Abdul Rashid Sheikh (BJP), Mr. Ali Mohammad Baba (Bahujan Samaj Party), Mr. Omer Abdullah (National Conference), Mr. Ghulam Hassan Dar (J&K Backward Classes Democratic Party), Mr. Farooq Ahmad (Democratic Party Nationalist), Mr. Farooq Ahmad (J&K National Panthers Party), Qazi Mohammad Afzal (PDP), Mr. Nisar Ahmad Bhat (Independent) and Mr. Nazir Ahmad Lone (Awami National Conference), are contesting the 2008 elections.
All polling personnel have been trained on EVMs, 2008 election. A joint Control Room has been set up in Physical College, Ganderbal with Contact Nos. 0194-2416058, 2416854, 2135474 and 0194-2416263.
Deputy Election Commissioners directed the officers to ensure free and fair elections and stressed on assuring security of polling staff as well as voters.
