| Baramulla candidates allege favouritism | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 21: Allegations and counter allegation notwithstanding some candidates in North Kashmir alleged that police is not allowing them to campaign in various parts of their constituency. An independent candidate from Sangrama constituency of Baramulla district alleged that police was not allowing him and other candidates to campaign in the constituency citing reasons like 'hyper sensitive area'. "Many other candidates and I have not been allowed by the police to go to villages of Sangrama constituency for campaigning on the pretext that the area is highly sensitive," Ghulam Mohammad Shaheen told reporters on Friday.
Shaheen alleged that the government is helping National Conference (NC) candidate Ghulam Qadir Bhat in campaigning and is providing him security cover during his campaigning. Shaheen said it was not election but "selection" going on in the Valley. "1996 is being repeated. The situation will go out of hands similar to 1990 when militancy erupted if such tactics were not checked immediately," he said and requested Election Commission to intervene in the matter immediately. Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla and District Election Officer Baseer Ahmad Khan, however, dismissed the allegations as "baseless and unfounded". "I have given clear cut instructions to the police to provide security to all the candidates and help them in the campaigning," Khan said, adding the police and district administration is playing an impartial role in the assembly elections. Sangrama and 17 other constituencies of Baramulla, Budgam, Udhampur and Reasi districts are scheduled to go to polls in the fourth phase of assembly elections on December seven. |
