| Boxing competitions remain inconclusive | | Science, Commerce college walkout amidst protest | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 21: Lodging their protest over some `biased decisions’ by the technical officials, the competitors from GGM Science College and SPMR College of Commerce today boycotted the inter-college boxing competitions conducted by the Department of Physical Education, University of Jammu at MA Stadium rings, here. Alleging favouritism by a competitor-cum-official, the boxers from two colleges refused to compete further and left the venue in protest despite persuasions from the organizers to play `under protest’. “We asked the Physical Directors from the two protesting colleges to continue playing the game by lodging a written protest—a provision under rules, if they have doubt over the credibility of any official or competitor,” Assistant Director Physical Education, University of Jammu, Dr Sonak Angchuk told SAN. “Even we offered replay of a particular bout that sparked the protest by replacing the official, who all of a sudden became doubtful. But, unfortunately, the boys were adamant not to play anymore,” giving his version, the Assistant Director said. However, the protesting boxers had a genuine cause to protest. “How an official, who himself was a competitor and also had blood relation with three other boxers, could be fair in his decisions,” questioned a boxer from Science College. In this regard, Assistant Director said, “We often rely on the coach of the concerned game to raise his team of technical officials in the inter-college competitions. Sometimes, inadvertently, someone makes it into the team of officials, which can be corrected through replacements or replay of the questionable bouts.” When asked, what next, the AD said, “The Department will be calling a meeting of all the concerned physical directors on Monday to sort out the matter”. Technical incharge of the competitions, NIS qualified boxing coach of the J&K State Sports Council, Anil Wadhera said, “We often feel it difficult to find a good stuff of technical officials to officiate in the competitions mainly because of two reasons. Firstly, the University of Jammu pays a meager amount of remuneration. Secondly, lack of support and encouragement from officials accompanying the college teams”. Anil further said that if anybody had objection about an officials, he should have objected yesterday, the first day of the competitions. “What happened today was something unhealthy for sports,” he regretted. |
