OMAR AMONG 81 IN FRAY
Campaign ends for phase two

Jammu, Nov 21: National Conference president Omar Abdullah is among 81 candidates in six assembly constituencies to face polls on Sunday as campaigning in Rajouri and Ganderbal districts ended this evening after a high level of political enthusiasm.
A record number of 81 candidates are in the fray in the six constituencies of Ganderbal, Kangan in recently carved out Ganderbal district and Nowshera, Kalakote, Rajouri and Darhal in Rajouri district that witnessed high pitched campaigning contrary to the first phase of polls on November 17.
Candidates were seen making a last minute effort to woo the voters as they went door-to-door, asking for votes in their favour as the campaign ended around 4 PM.
Compared to 2002 elections when 46 candidates were in the fray in the six constituencies, a record number of 81 nominees including NC president Omar Abdullah, his arch rival Qazi Mohammad Afzal of PDP, NC rebels Choudhary Talib Hussain and Mohammad Sharief Tariq and Congress rebel Ashok Kumar Sharma are in the fray.
In Ganderbal, an electorate of 77,627 have to choose their representative from the constituency which attracted only six candidates in 2002 when Qazi scraped through.
In the adjacent Kangan constituency, NC nominee Mian Altaf who has already registered a hat-trick is seeking re-election for the fourth time.
Eleven candidates are fighting in Nowshera constituency this time as compared to five in 2002 elections.
Radhay Sham sharma of NC has been challenged by 10 others including Romesh Chander Sharma of Congress and Arshad Mehmood of PDP this time. There are 85,723 voters in the constituency.
In Darhal constituency, 12 candidates including a woman, Sheraz Begum of BSP, are seeking entry to the state assembly. Choudhary Zulfikar Ali of Peoples Democratic Party, Liaqat of National Conference and Mohammad Iqbal Malik, independent, are locked in a keen contest. In 2002 elections there were only nine candidates in the fray.
The highest number of candidates in a single constituency is being witnessed in Rajouri as 23 candidates are in the fray.
Mohammad Aslam Khan of NC who won from this constituency in 2002 polls, is being challenged by two party rebels in former minister Mohammad Sharief Tariq and Choudhary Talib Hussain. Master Tasadiq Hussain of PDP is also trying his luck from the constituency.
In 2002 elections, there were only 14 candidates in the fray in Rajouri constituency.
There are 13 candidates in the fray in Kalakote constituency where life of the official Congress candidate Abdul Ghani Kohli has been made miserable by party rebel Ashok Kumar Sharma who is contesting as an independent.
The PDP patron sought absolute majority for his party in the ongoing assembly elections so that revolutionary policies being propagated by the party be implemented without any hindrance.
He said in short span of just three years, PDP has already carved out a path of peace in this region and convinced both India and Pakistan to take some concrete steps for restoring sustainable peace in this sub-continent.
