| Age breaks barriers, as people queue up for change | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 23: As 90-year-old Noor Hussain dovetailed with the expanding queue outside the polling station in Kalakote to exercise his franchise, one could not miss the twinkle in his eyes that reflected the hope of a better future. When asked about his enthusiasm, he replied quietly that he had voted for peace and prosperity in the State even as basic amenities continue to remain the main concerns of the people of this region. Similarly, for first-time voters like Surjeet Singh, the black mark on the finger reminded them of being a part of the biggest democracy where people have the right to choose their representatives in a free, fair and transparent manner. Such enthusiasm was evident in all the polling stations in Kalakote Assembly constituency where brisk polling is going on in the second phase of J&K Assembly elections, along with three other Assembly constituencies of Rajouri district, besides Ganderbal district in Kashmir valley. People started gathering outside the polling stations from wee hours only and by midday, they converted into long queues. By afternoon, nearly 50 per cent voting was reported in almost all the polling stations. In Dangri-A and Dangri-B Polling Stations, out of 1,091 and 976 total voters, 585 and 242 voters had polled their votes, respectively. Similarly, in Sayal Sui Polling Station, 493 voters polled their votes out of 818 registered voters. Among them, 256 were women, which is a clear indicator of the growing emancipation among the rural womenfolk. |
