Ganderbal seals Omar’s fate

SRINAGAR, Nov 23: Political fate of National Conference president Omar Abdullah and prestige of Abdullah dynasty has been sealed for the December 28 results as Ganderbal went to polls peacefully despite odds of weather and separatist boycott.
Braving boycott call, morning chill and walking long distances, people in Ganderbal and Kangan constituencies were seen enthusiastically flocking to the polling stations in large numbers today. Among the voters, many a centenarian, physically challenged people and women in huge numbers expressed delight in expressing their constitutional right to vote.
In the morning, long serpentine queues of voters were seen outside the polling stations eager to cast their vote. In many cases, women adorned in traditional woolen garments could be seen waiting for turn to exercise their franchise. This included one Mrs. Umar Jan, aged 111 year, who too was bearing the pushes of the queue to cast her vote. When asked about, this experience, she expressed delight and pride in voting at this point in her age. Similarly, Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Ganai, a physically challenged person 100, too was seen eager to cast his vote.
A unique trend in several of the polling stations was that women voters outnumbered men. At 31-Poshkar polling booth, out of the total number of 527 votes polled till 12 Noon, 265 women had cast their votes as against 162 males. Similarly, at Gund-A polling station, out of the total number of 370 votes polled till 12.30 p.m., the number of female voters was 137.
When it comes to elections, age seldom thwarts the aspirations of the people. In the Kangan constituency, many a centenarians braving cold weather and old age inertia came to vote. In 13-B Hari Ganven polling station, a centenarian namely Mian Mohammad Ishaq Baji travelled a distance of 5 kms on the horse back to cast his vote. Ghulam Mohammad, aged 102, was seen standing in a queue to cast his vote. Similarly, Majid Khan, about 100 years old, came to 30-Baranbug polling station to register his franchise. At 34-Wangat B, another centenarian women cast her vote and at 35-Wangat C, Fatima Bano, aged 103 years was seen inking her index finger to cast her vote.
In the Ganderbal constituency at 67-Lar A polling station, Mrs. Bibi aged over 90 years cast her vote. In the same polling station, Mushtaq Ahmad Hajam, a physically challenged person reaching the polling station on prosthetic aids to cast his vote. In Duderhama, 80 year old Ghulam Rasool was among the early voters.
