Tension in Majalta after dowry death
Engineer held in Talab Tillo for ‘engineering’ wife’s murder

JAMMU, Nov 23: Tension broke out in Majalta area of Udhampur district following death of a young newlywed woman whose parents alleged that she took the extreme step due to cruelties inflicted upon her by husband and parents-in-law.
Meanwhile, Jammu Police have arrested an Engineer and search is on for his parents in connection with mysterious death of his wife three months back. In this also parents of the deceased woman alleged that she was under constant harassment from the parents-in-law for dowry.
Reports said that a war like situation prevailed in the Majalta area when parents of the deceased Anita Kumari along with hundreds of the people came to the place of her in-laws of demanding probe into mysterious death of their daughter. Anita’s body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room today.
As clashes broke out after gathering of hundreds of people from both side, the Police registered a case for investigation. SSP Udhampur, Surinder Gupta has ordered a probe but no arrests have been made so far.
Anita Kumari, 21, daughter of Atma Ram, resident of Jandrah was married with the one Jagdish Singh resident of Majalta barely some months ago and last night her body was found hanging from the ceiling fan. Residents of the area alleged that her in-laws inflicted cruelties on her following which she took extreme step. Interestingly the parents of the deceased were not informed and even the police station got information when parents of the deceased with hundreds of the people reach in Majalta area on the while the body of the deceased was being taken for last rite.
Parents alleged that her in laws demanded handsome dowry which they did not afford. They alleged that her daughter was subject to harassment. They also staged protest demonstration against the police as no case was registered against her in laws. Police officers also reached on the spot and a board of doctors was constituted for postmortem of the deceased. The body was later handed over to the parents. The body had injurious marks around her neck and arms.
Meanwhile, a shocking case of alleged dowry death has come to light involving young engineer Jitendra Mengi, running his own business establishment in Talab Tillo area of Jammu.
Mengi, was arrested by Jammu police on Sunday, almost three month after his wife identified as Maneka Mengi, was found dead under mysterious circumstances, under charges of abetting suicide. Family members of deceased alleged their daughter was murdered by her in-laws.
Parents of Jitendra Mengi identified as Bansi Lal Mengi and Raksha Mengi are absconding along with their daughter Mrs Shivani Abrol, married in Udhampur.
Menaka Mengi was found dead on August 17, 2008 inside her room in Gol Pulli area of Talab Tillo.
Maneka was happily married to Jitendra Mengi on November 10, 2002.The couple had two children, five year old Manya and infant born in the month of May 2008.
The police swung in to action only after parents of Maneka Mengi alleged that their daughter was allegedly murdered and demanded through investigation. It is learnt that police resisted the pressure under duress as one of the senior officers posted in Jammu city was a close relative of Jitendra Mengi.
A case was booked under FIR 174/ 08 UNDER SECTION 306 AND 498 A after SSP Jammu Manohar Singh personally intervened and directed the concerned SHO Nowabad to register the case as per rules.
Maneka's father Ramesh Chander,resident of Vikas Nagar Talab Tillo, has informed police in his statement that his daughter was not leading happy married life as her greedy in-laws started demanding dowry and abused her immediately her marriage. They were even demanding more money and luxurious goods along with running capital to establish business of their son, who was not able to run his business. Mr Ramesh Chander informed police that after his daughter’s marriage he arranged a sum of Rs 2.5 lakh and gave it to Jitendra. We provided one AC and refrigerator to Jitendra but their greed was not satiated, Ramesh Chander said. A day before her death under mysterious circumstances
Maneka had informed her parents that she was being abused by her in-laws who were demanding more money from her parents
