EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Nov 24: Defying undeclared curfew, people in Baramulla poured on to the streets to protest against the arrest of eleven youth who were picked up by police from their homes during the night preceding Monday.
According to PBI, 11 persons were arrested last night by police from Khanpora, Old Town, Kanspora and Ashkora mohallas which triggered protests on Monday morning when people defied curfew and came on roads. They were demanding immediate release of the arrested youth and were chanting anti-election and pro-freedom slogans.
Protesters alleged that all the arrested youth were picked up by police at around 11.00 p.m. last night without any reason. When the demonstrators faced police at main market Baramulla they shouted boycott slogans aloud after which police pounced on them with canes and tear gas canisters.
Police also resorted to firing in air to quell the protesting people. There was palpable tension throughout the day in Baramulla Township which is mourning the two young boys who were killed by paramilitary CRPF personnel on Saturday.
The arrested have been identified as Naseer Ahmad Sheikh son of Ghulam Hassan; Fayaz ahmad Kumar son of Ghulam Qadir; Tariq Ahmad Kumar son of Ghulam Qadir; Noorudin Kumar son of Ghulam Qadir, all residents of Khanpora; Mufti Aijaz (Imam Biatul Mukarram) of Mohalla Jadeed; Abdul Majeed Dar of Ashkoora;Zahoor Ahmad Dar and Shaheen Ahmad Dar, both residents of Kanspora; two brothers Ishtiaq Ahmad Saley and Tanveer Ahmad Saley from Kanlibagh.
Meanwhile, police has sealed all the roads leading to Baramulla and no vehicle was allowed to enter the township on Monday. Media persons were also restricted from delivering their professional duties, PBI reported. The agitated youth of the town stopped pedestrians from Bandipora and thrashed them. People called them "traitors" and directed them to get out of Baramulla. "We are being killed and you were casting votes," the protestors told them.
Reports from Sopore said that people staged protests at Main Chowk, Baba Yousuf, Jamia and Iqbal Market against the alleged police and forces excesses. However, police cane charged and burst tear smoke canisters to disperse the agitators.
