EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Nov 24: Dozens of people were injured and as many vehicles suffered damage when agitated people hurled stones at the vehicles of various political leaders at many places in Pulwama on Monday.
According to Press Bureau of India, the cavalcade of PDP president came under heavy stone pelting at Rajpora chowk when she was returning after filing her nomination papers for Wachi constituency at 1.00 p.m. Monday. About two dozen vehicles of Mehbooba's cavalcade suffered damage after being stoned from three sides. Police sources said that Mehbooba escaped unhurt during the attack. Later police resorted to tear smoke shelling and cane charge to chase away the marauding mob which left about 30 people injured. Mehbooba Mufti while confirming the stone pelting incident has alleged that some people of opposite camp did all the marauding at Rajpora Chowk.
Earlier, Congress candidate Abdul Gani Dar after filing his nomination papers left DC office Pulwama, accompanied by drum- beaters. However, when he reached Rajpora Chowk, people assembled there and showered stones at Dar and his drum-beaters. In the mayhem, Dar left his vehicle there and fled from the place.
According to PBI, National Conference candidate for Pulwama, Ghulam Nabi Ratanpuri also faced the peoples' fury when his cavalcade was also stoned at Pulwama. Many vehicles were damaged in the incident, sources told PBI. However, Ratanpuri said that he was not the target of people fury.
Meanwhile, sensing the inclement situation in the area, Omar Abdullah, who had to pass through the place to attend an election rally, cancelled his visit. Police sources told PBI, that Omer had plans to campaign for Ratanpuri but had to abandon the idea. Soon after the stone pelting police and forces cordoned off the area and imposed curfew-like restrictions to thwart any similar eventuality. However, dozens of youth continued to fight pitched battles with the police forcing them to open fire. Reports reaching PBI said that one person Rahil Rashid suffered bullet injury during the shootout.
