| Union Forest Minister inaugurates National Workshop on Snow Leopard at Leh | | | Leh, July 10 – The Union Forest and Environment Minister Mr. Thiru A Raju inaugurated a National workshop on Snow Leopard here today. Forest experts from many mountainous states like Skim, Uttranchal, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh participated in the workshop were also present. Forest Minister Mr. Tariq Hamid Qarra, Power Minster Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora, Chief Executive Council, LAHDC, Leh Mr. Tsering Dorje, Director General Forest Government of India Mr. J. C. Kala, Commissioner Secretary, J&K State Mr. Najim-us-Saqib attended the function. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Thiru A. Raja said that the centre would be giving its fullest support in institution of Snow Leopard Project like that of Project Elephant and project tiger. Calling Snow Leopard ‘Big Cat’ the Union Forest Minister aid that the Snow Leopard has a estimated population of 3, 500 to 7,000 in world over. India harbors an estimated population of 500 Snow Leopards inhabiting in states like, J&K, Himachal Pardesh, Utteranchal, Skim and Arunchal Pradesh. The Union Minister said that what Tiger means to most of the Forested and Grassland eco-system of the Indian sub-continent, it is the Snow Leopard for the high altitude eco-systems of the Himalaya and Central Asian Mountains. Again like the Tiger, the Snow Leopard is also at the apex of the food pyramid in the Himalaya, helping in the maintenance of the balance of nature. It can, therefore project Snow Leopard be regarded as an Umbrella, species, the Minister added. Mr. Raja said that the project Leopard would not only benefit the snow leopard alone but also several another wild life species that inhabited in the area. Mr. Raja said that the Central government has played a significant role in proposing Project Snow Leopard in the lines of the successful Project Tiger and Project Elephant during early 1990s but it beaver got into the implementation stage. He hoped that deliberations of the workshop would go a long way in devising schemes, measures and plans to ensure the project Leopard for conservation of the various endangered species. |
