| Mehbooba files papers for Wachi | | 208 in fray for 5th phase | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 24: PDP President Mehbooba Mufti was among 103 candidates who filed their papers on the last day of nominations today for the 11 seats spread over Pulwama, Shopian and Kathua districts going to polls in the fifth phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir on December 13. With this, the total number of candidates in these assembly segments has risen to 208. Besides sitting MP Mehbooba Mufti who filed her nomination from Wachi constituency in Shopian district, other prominent candidate who filed his papers today was senior Congress leader and sitting MP Lal Singh (Kathua), the sources said. The highest number of 46 candidates filed their papers from the four constituencies of Pulwama including Tral, Pampore, Pulwama and Rajpora, raising the total number of candidates in these constituencies to 82. Of these Tral segment accounted for the highest number of 25 candidates followed by Pulwama and Rajpura (20 each) and Pampore (17), the sources said. Thirty six candidates filed their papers from the five constituencies of Kathua district - Billawar, Hiranagar, Kathua, Bani and Basohli - raising the number to 82, they said adding Kathua segment accounted for the highest 20 candidates followed by Billawar (17), Basohli (16), Hiranagar (15) and Bani (14). The sources said 21 candidates filed their papers from Shopian and Wachi segments today. While 14 candidates submitted their papers in Shopian raising the number to 23, seven candidates filed their papers in Wachi raising the number to 21. The notification for the eleven seats going to the hustings on December 13, was issued on November 17. The scrutiny of the papers will be conducted tomorrow, while November 27 has been set as the last date for withdrawal. Meanwhile, Babu Singh, who on the persistent demand of the people of the area, decided to contest the election from Kathua constituency as an independent candidate, today released his election manifesto at a people’s convention held at Ram Lilla ground. Babu Singh in his manifesto pledged to work for the overall development of Kathua constituency and J&K state with full honesty, integrity and dedication. He affirmed that he is committed for the solution of individual as well as collective problems of people irrespective of caste and religion. He will give special attention towards the problems of poor and down trodden masses, especially poor workers, farmers, women and unemployed youth. Babu Singh resolved to continue fight against corruption and work for the unity and brotherhood of the people with principle of rational humanism and people empowerment. The manifesto gives full details of the works completed and under execution in the district which were taken up at his behest. He said that he had no lust for the power and has fully dedicated his life for the welfare of down trodden people. He has lived like a missionary throughout his life and always fought against corruption, injustice and undemocratic practices. The corrupt leaders, who have gathered huge wealth are properties, are always misguiding people and society for their petty interests, he said adding that such elements cannot befool people this time; as today’s big mammoth gathering in the rally has given clear message to such corrupt leaders and the parties who believe in policy of patronizing family members in the politics. Accompanied by a strong crowd, Babu Singh filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate. |
